The City of Roeland Park Appoints New Mayor, Michael Poppa

Roeland Park, Kan. (January 4, 2023) –  During last night’s city council meeting, the City of Roeland Park appointed a new mayor, Michael Poppa (ward 4 council member). His term goes immediately into effect and he will fill the vacant seat left by Johnson County Board of Commissioners Chair-Elect, Mike Kelly. 

“Thank you to the city council for trusting in my abilities and granting me this opportunity,” said Roeland Park Mayor, Michael Poppa. “I am proud of all we've accomplished together so far, and honored to continue serving our community in this new role.”

“I have resigned my position as mayor, but I am not going far,” said County Chairman-elect Michael Kelly. “I’m still your neighbor, and my role as County Chairman will allow me to share our Roeland Park spirit with all of our neighbors throughout Johnson County. Please continue to contact me with your questions, concerns, and ideas. Thank you for the opportunity to serve our city.” 

Per city code, Poppa will serve as mayor until the next regularly scheduled election in November 2023 at which time he plans to run to fill the remainder of the unexpired term. Poppa’s open council seat will be filled by application and appointment with ratification by the city council. The person appointed will also serve until November 2023 with the option to run to fill the unexpired term.
