Public Art in Roeland Park
The City of Roeland Park is dedicated to promoting and supporting public art and local artists.
The selection and placement of public art is led by a group of dedicated local volunteers that make up the Arts Advisory Committee. These volunteers are tasked with making recommendations to Council on the purchase and location of public art using the City's annual budget allocated to the purchase and maintenance of art. For more information, check out the Art Advisory Committee's webpage for meeting agendas and minutes.
One percent for Art
In 2010, the City approved a resolution that required all new buildings constructed in Roeland Park to dedicate 1% of the development cost to the purchase and placement of public art. In 2019, Resolution no. 664 allowed for private entities to make a donation equivalent to 1% of the development cost to the City for the future placement and purchase of public art. The purchase and maintenance of the art then becomes the responsibility of the City. This policy has brought several new pieces to Roeland Park from renowned artists such as "Origin," located at the north end of Roe Boulevard, "Prairie Ramble," located at the Sunflower Medical Building, and "Untitled Dango", located at Commerce Bank, to name a few.
In response to the mixed use apartment development known as "The Rocks, " this policy was further amended in 2025 via Resolution no. 724 to cap the required contribution for for public art at $500,000.
Public Art Master Plan
On November 17, 2025, the City Council adopted the Community's first Public Art Master Plan which will drive future art installations and initiatives spearheaded by the City and the Art Advisory Committee. Check out the presentation here!
The Public Art Master Plan provides a framework for expanding and sustaining a vibrant public art program that reflects Roeland Park’s past, present, and future. Informed by national best practices and extensive community engagement, the plan outlines strategic recommendations for art projects and activations that promote placemaking, belonging, and connectivity. As a living document, it will guide the City’s future public art efforts while showcasing Roeland Park’s unique character.
Over an eight-month period, community feedback was gathered through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and tabling at the R Park Concert. The plan reflects residents’ aspirations for public art and the broader community, with outcomes that can inform other City projects and initiatives.
The plan includes administrative guidelines, funding recommendations, and a draft public art policy designed to ensure consistency, transparency, and adherence to best practices. Implementation will be led by City staff and the Arts Advisory Committee with the support of the Mayor and City Council.
